About Carpenter Ant
📖Biology and behaviour
Carpenter ants are large black or dark ants that nest inside damp or damaged wood. Unlike termites they do not eat wood. They excavate it to make smooth galleries for their nest and push the shavings out through small openings.
They are most often found where wood has been affected by moisture: roof leaks, bathroom and kitchen window frames, door frames, wooden beams and old trees near the building. Seeing many large ants at night, or little piles of coarse sawdust, is the usual clue.

Signs of Carpenter Ant
What to look for, and how to prevent it🔎How to spot an infestation
- Coarse, sawdust-like shavings and insect bits in small piles under wood
- Large black ants walking at night along walls, pipes and trails
- Faint rustling noise inside walls or frames
- Smooth, clean tunnels inside damaged wood
- Winged ants appearing indoors in warm, humid weather
🛡️How to prevent it
- Fix roof, wall and plumbing leaks quickly and let damp wood dry
- Repair or replace rotted timber
- Trim tree branches that touch the building
- Keep firewood and timber off the ground and away from the walls
- Seal cracks and gaps around windows, doors and pipes
- Keep food sealed so scout ants do not find a steady supply
How Carpenter Ant is controlled
Integrated approach🧪Control methods
Sanitation (clearing food residue, sealing entry points, trimming vegetation touching the building) reduces foraging incentive, while a licensed PCO's bait-based programme — targeting the colony, not just visible workers — is the most effective long-term control; spray-only treatment often just scatters or splits a colony.
👷When to call a professional
Finding the nest is the key. A PCO can trace ant trails, locate parent and satellite nests and treat them, then advise how to repair the moisture problem that attracted the ants.

Common questions about Carpenter Ant
Are carpenter ants the same as termites?
No. Carpenter ants excavate wood for nesting and leave sawdust-like shavings, while termites eat wood and often leave mud tubes. They need different treatments.
Why do I see big ants at night?
Carpenter ants forage mostly at night, travelling along regular trails from the nest to food and water.
Does sealing food stop them?
It helps reduce scouts, but the nest is the main issue. Treat the nest and fix the moisture problem.
Can they damage a building?
Over time they can weaken wood, especially where damage and moisture continue. The damage is usually slower than termites.
