📖Biology and behaviour
Fleas are tiny, wingless, jumping insects that feed on the blood of dogs, cats and sometimes people. An adult flea is only 2–3 mm long, but it can jump many times its own length, which is why it is so hard to catch.
Only a small part of the flea population is on your pet. Most of the eggs, larvae and pupae are in the surroundings: carpets, bedding, sofas, cracks in the floor and shady corners of the garden. Pupae can stay dormant for months and hatch when they sense movement and warmth, so people sometimes get bitten on arriving in a house that has been empty for a while.

- Pets scratching, licking and biting their skin more than usual

- Treat pets regularly with a vet-recommended flea product
- Wash pet bedding weekly in hot water and dry it well
- Vacuum carpets, sofas and floors often and dispose of the bag outside
- Keep the garden shady corners and pet resting areas clean and dry
- Treat all pets in the house at the same time
- Seal gaps and cracks where larvae can hide

Control requires a thorough inspection to find every harbourage point, washing or heat-treating infested fabric, and a licensed PCO's targeted treatment programme, often over more than one visit — over-the-counter sprays alone rarely resolve an established infestation.
👷When to call a professional
Flea control needs the pet and the home to be treated together. Ask your vet about the pet treatment, and a PCO to treat the premises. Do not apply pest control products directly on animals unless the label says so.

Why do fleas return after I treat the house?
Pupae in the carpet and cracks can hatch weeks later, and untreated pets bring in new fleas. Treat pets and surroundings together and repeat as advised.
Can fleas live on people?
They bite people, usually on the ankles and legs, but they prefer pets and do not stay on humans.
How do I check my pet for fleas?
Part the fur, especially near the tail and belly, and look for small dark specks or moving insects. A white cloth under the pet can reveal flea dirt.
Is it safe to treat the house with pets around?
Follow your PCO's and the product label's instructions, and keep pets out until treated areas are dry.
