About House Fly

📖Biology and behaviour

The housefly is the most common fly in Indian homes, restaurants, dairies, markets and poultry farms. It feeds on both filth and food, and its sticky feet and mouthparts pick up germs from waste, manure and drains and deposit them on whatever it lands on next. It is linked to the spread of diarrhoea, dysentery, typhoid and cholera organisms.

Flies breed fast: eggs laid in rubbish, manure or decaying food hatch into maggots within a day and become adult flies in as little as a week in warm weather. That is why killing adult flies alone rarely solves the problem. You have to find and remove the breeding site.

Signs of House Fly

What to look for, and how to prevent it

🔎How to spot an infestation

  • Flies gathering on food, bins, drains and near open waste
  • Maggots in bins, compost, animal droppings or spoiled food
  • Small dark specks (fly spots) on walls, ceilings and light fittings
  • A sudden surge in fly numbers during warm, humid weather

🛡️How to prevent it

  • Keep bins covered, clean them often and take rubbish out daily
  • Cover food and clean up spills quickly
  • Fit mesh on windows and doors and use fly screens in kitchens
  • Keep drains clean and flush them regularly
  • Manage manure, compost and animal waste away from living areas
  • Use UV light traps in kitchens, restaurants and shops to reduce flies indoors

How House Fly is controlled

Integrated approach

🧪Control methods

Control starts with removing breeding sites (waste management, drain cleaning, moisture control) and screening doors and windows, backed by a PCO's fly-control programme — light traps, space treatment and residual treatment of resting surfaces — for persistent infestations.

👷When to call a professional

Finding the breeding source is the key. A PCO will survey the premises, advise on waste handling and use a mix of residual treatment on resting surfaces, baits and traps. In food premises, treatments must follow the hygiene rules of your audit.

Common questions about House Fly

Where do all these flies come from?

Look for rubbish, manure, drains and rotting food within about 100 metres. A single poorly managed bin or manure heap can supply hundreds of flies every day in warm weather.

Are fly baits and sprays enough?

They reduce the adults you see but the next generation is already developing in the breeding site. Removing or treating that site is what stops the cycle.

Do UV fly traps work?

They attract flying insects and are very useful in kitchens and shops, but they are an addition to good waste management, not a replacement.

Is it safe to use fly treatments around food?

Only use products labelled for the area, and follow the label and your PCO's advice. In food premises, protect food and surfaces and follow your hygiene audit requirements.
