About Powder-post Beetle

📖Biology and behaviour

Powderpost beetles are small wood-boring beetles whose larvae tunnel inside seasoned hardwood until it turns to fine powder. They are a major problem for furniture, door and window frames, flooring, plywood, veneers, cane and bamboo products and handicrafts in India.

You rarely see the beetle itself. The larvae feed inside the wood for months or years, and the damage only shows when the adults emerge, leaving small round exit holes and a fine, flour-like dust called frass. Because the wood is hollowed from inside, the surface can look sound while the strength is gone.

Signs of Powder-post Beetle

What to look for, and how to prevent it

🔎How to spot an infestation

  • Round exit holes about 1–2 mm across on wood surfaces
  • Fine, flour-like powder that falls from the holes or collects under furniture
  • Powder that reappears after you clean it, meaning the infestation is active
  • Weakened or crumbly wood that breaks easily
  • Tiny brown beetles near infested wood, especially after the monsoon

🛡️How to prevent it

  • Buy well-seasoned, treated timber and plywood, and check for pinholes before purchase
  • Keep timber dry and well ventilated, and avoid damp storage
  • Seal and polish all surfaces of furniture, including the back and underside
  • Isolate and inspect new or second-hand furniture before use
  • Treat bamboo, cane and handicraft stock before storage
  • Clear dust regularly and watch for fresh powder

How Powder-post Beetle is controlled

Integrated approach

🧪Control methods

Affected timber typically needs treatment with a wood-preservative/borer-control chemical (surface application or injection) by a licensed applicator, and severely damaged structural members may need replacement; treating new timber during construction prevents most cases.

👷When to call a professional

Wood borers often need treatment by brushing, spraying or injecting suitable wood preservatives and, for plywood and veneer, treatment in the manufacturing process. A PCO or wood-treatment specialist can assess how far the damage has gone and whether furniture is worth saving.

Common questions about Powder-post Beetle

How do I know if wood borers are still active?

Fresh, clean-looking powder under the holes, or powder that returns after cleaning, means the larvae are still feeding. Old, dull holes without fresh dust usually mean the infestation has ended.

Can painting or polishing stop wood borers?

Surface coating on its own will not kill larvae inside the wood, but a good seal can stop new beetles from laying eggs in treated wood.

Why does my new furniture have pinholes?

Wood that was not properly seasoned or treated before manufacture may already contain larvae that emerge later.

Is plywood affected by wood borers?

Plywood made without proper preservative treatment of the glue line and veneers can be attacked. Look at the treatment information for plywood and handicraft products.
