About Rice Weevil

📖Biology and behaviour

The rice weevil is a tiny reddish-brown beetle with a long snout that attacks stored rice, wheat, maize, sorghum and many other whole grains. It is one of the most common stored-grain pests in India and attacks grain in homes, shops, mills, godowns and food-processing sites.

The female bores a small hole in a grain, lays an egg and seals it, so the whole life cycle takes place inside the kernel. This hides the damage until the adult beetles emerge, leaving hollowed grains, powder and a sour smell. Warm and humid storage speeds this up a lot.

Signs of Rice Weevil

What to look for, and how to prevent it

🔎How to spot an infestation

  • Small dark beetles crawling over or flying around stored grain
  • Round exit holes in grains and a fine powder at the bottom of the container
  • Grain that clumps, smells musty and feels warm or damp
  • Grain kernels that float when put in water
  • Webbing or spoilage in heavy infestations

🛡️How to prevent it

  • Buy fresh stock and avoid mixing new grain with old
  • Store in clean, dry, airtight containers and off the floor
  • Keep storage areas cool, dry and well ventilated
  • Clean the storage space and containers thoroughly before restocking
  • Inspect stocks every few weeks, especially in summer and monsoon
  • Sun-dry or freeze small quantities of suspect grain, and discard heavily infested stock

How Rice Weevil is controlled

Integrated approach

🧪Control methods

Control relies on strict stock rotation (FIFO), sealed storage, regular inspection of incoming material, and — for active infestations — fumigation or heat/cold treatment by a licensed operator; residual insecticide treatment of storage structures (never the food itself) helps prevent re-infestation.

👷When to call a professional

For godowns, mills and retail stores, a PCO can design a programme of monitoring, hygiene and fumigation or residual treatment suited to the storage method. Fumigation should always be done by trained operators.

Common questions about Rice Weevil

Is infested rice safe to eat?

Light infestation can sometimes be cleaned, but heavily infested grain is spoiled and best discarded. When in doubt, throw it out.

Where do the weevils come from?

They often arrive in grain from the shop or mill, or fly in from nearby infested stores. Eggs inside the grain can be present when you buy.

Do bay leaves or neem leaves help?

They may offer mild deterrence, but they will not clear an infestation. Hygiene and airtight storage work better.

How long does a weevil cycle take?

In warm weather it can complete in about a month, which is why infestations grow quickly in summer.
