About Silverfish
📖Biology and behaviour
Silverfish are small, wingless, silvery-grey insects with a carrot or teardrop shape and three long tail filaments. They move with a quick, wriggling run and prefer dark, humid places. They feed on starchy material: paper, book bindings, wallpaper paste, cardboard, photographs, cotton and linen with starch.
In Indian homes they are most common in the monsoon, in old books and files, wardrobes, store-rooms and bathrooms. They do not bite or spread disease, but they can damage documents, books, clothes and wallpaper, and they can live for months without feeding.

How Silverfish is controlled
Integrated approach🧪Control methods
Regular cleaning and inspection of stored textiles, proper ventilation, pheromone monitoring traps, and — for active infestations — a PCO's targeted residual or fumigation treatment of the storage area are the standard control measures.
👷When to call a professional
For valuable archives, libraries or large stores, a PCO can inspect and apply a treatment suited to the setting. In homes, humidity control and clean storage usually do most of the work.

Where you will find it
18 sectorsCommon questions about Silverfish
Do silverfish bite?
No. They are harmless to people but can damage paper, books and fabrics.
Why do I see them mostly in the monsoon?
Humidity rises indoors and silverfish thrive in damp, dark conditions, so they become more visible.
How do I protect my books?
Keep them dry, off the floor and out of damp walls, with silica gel in cupboards and regular airing.
Can silverfish survive without food?
Yes. They can live for months without eating, so removing one food source does not remove them quickly.
