About American Cockroach
📖Biology and behaviour
The American cockroach is the largest of the common household cockroaches and the one most likely to make people jump. It is reddish-brown with a pale yellowish band behind its head, and it can reach 3–5 cm. Despite the name it is an old-world pest and extremely common across Indian cities.
It lives outdoors and indoors, but wants warmth and moisture. Drains, sewer lines, manholes, basements, water meter pits, godowns and ducts are its main homes, and from there it comes into kitchens and bathrooms through floor drains and gaps around pipes. In warm weather it can glide or fly short distances, which surprises many people.

Signs of American Cockroach
What to look for, and how to prevent it🔎How to spot an infestation
- Large cockroaches coming up from floor drains or bathroom outlets at night
- Big, dark droppings, larger than those of the German cockroach, near drains and under sinks
- Oval, dark brown egg cases stuck to damp surfaces near pipes and corners
- A strong musty smell in damp store-rooms
- Individuals seen in daytime around manholes or garbage areas
🛡️How to prevent it
- Keep floor drain covers fitted and use a trap or water seal so sewer gas and insects cannot rise
- Seal gaps around pipes, ducts and cable entries, especially in bathrooms and ground floors
- Repair leaking pipes and keep basements and store-rooms dry and ventilated
- Keep garbage in closed bins and clear it every day
- Clear clutter and cardboard from godowns and keep stock off the floor
- Check outside drains, inspection chambers and gullies as part of the treatment plan
How American Cockroach is controlled
Integrated approach🧪Control methods
Control relies on sanitation (removing food and water sources, sealing cracks and crevices, fixing leaks), monitoring with sticky traps to find harbourage points, and a licensed pest control operator's targeted gel-bait, residual spray or space-treatment programme — repeated as needed, since populations rebound quickly from any untreated harbourage.
👷When to call a professional
American cockroaches live in drains and sewer systems that you cannot reach yourself, so a professional is usually needed. A licensed PCO will treat the outdoor and drain-side harbourage as well as the inside of the premises, which is the only way to stop re-entry.

Common questions about American Cockroach
Why do big cockroaches come out of my bathroom drain?
The drain connects to the sewer or soak-pit system, which is their natural home. A missing drain cover, a dry trap or gaps around pipes lets them climb up. Covering and sealing the drain, and treating the sewer-side harbourage, cuts the traffic.
Can American cockroaches fly?
They can glide or make short flights, mostly in warm, humid weather and especially near light. They do not fly strongly, but a startled cockroach can land on a person, which is why they cause alarm.
Is the American cockroach harmful to health?
They move between sewers and kitchens, so they can contaminate food and surfaces with bacteria and are linked to allergy and asthma triggers. Keep food covered and have a PCO deal with persistent activity.
Will spraying inside the kitchen be enough?
Rarely. If the cockroaches are entering from drains and outdoor areas, indoor treatment alone only handles those that have already come in. Exterior and drain-side treatment is part of the job.
