About German Cockroach
📖Biology and behaviour
The German cockroach is the cockroach most Indian kitchens actually struggle with. It is small, light brown and quick, and it lives indoors for its whole life, so it never needs to come in from outside. A single female carries her egg case until the eggs are almost ready to hatch, which is why a handful of insects can turn into a serious infestation within a few weeks.
It prefers warm, humid spots close to food and water: behind the fridge and gas stove, inside the motor housing of appliances, under the sink, in cupboard hinges and in the gaps of tiled counters. It also travels easily in grocery cartons, delivery boxes and second-hand appliances, so a clean home can still get it.

Signs of German Cockroach
What to look for, and how to prevent it🔎How to spot an infestation
- Live insects in the kitchen when you switch the light on at night, or in daytime, which usually means a heavy population
- Dark, pepper-like specks (droppings) along the edges of cupboards, shelves and appliances
- Smear marks on walls and an oily, musty smell in closed cupboards
- Pale brown egg cases, about the size of a grain of rice, in corners and hinges
- Shed skins, especially behind appliances and under the sink
🛡️How to prevent it
- Wipe counters and stove-tops every night and do not leave dirty dishes or open food overnight
- Fix dripping taps and wipe the sink dry before bed, since water matters as much as food
- Store flour, sugar, pulses and pet food in airtight containers
- Unpack cartons and delivery boxes outside the kitchen and discard cardboard promptly
- Seal gaps around pipes, sink cut-outs and cabinet edges with sealant
- Take rubbish out daily and keep the bin lid shut
How German Cockroach is controlled
Integrated approach🧪Control methods
Control relies on sanitation (removing food and water sources, sealing cracks and crevices, fixing leaks), monitoring with sticky traps to find harbourage points, and a licensed pest control operator's targeted gel-bait, residual spray or space-treatment programme — repeated as needed, since populations rebound quickly from any untreated harbourage.
👷When to call a professional
If you see them in daylight, in several rooms, or they return within a few weeks of cleaning, call a licensed pest control operator. Heavy infestations need a proper survey, bait placed at the right points and a follow-up visit. Over-spraying on your own often scatters the insects into other rooms instead of reducing them.

Common questions about German Cockroach
Why do I still see cockroaches in a spotless kitchen?
German cockroaches need very little. A damp sponge, a crumb under the toaster or condensation from the fridge is enough. They also arrive in cartons and appliances, so cleanliness slows them down but rarely stops a started infestation.
Are cockroach gels better than sprays?
For German cockroaches, professionals rely heavily on gel baits because the insects eat the bait and carry it back to the nest, which also reaches the hidden ones. Sprays can drive them deeper into cracks. Which is right depends on the site, and a PCO can combine them.
How fast do German cockroaches multiply?
Very fast. Females carry the egg case until just before hatching and each case holds a few dozen eggs. Nymphs mature within weeks in a warm kitchen, which is why one visible roach is often the tip of a much larger group.
Is it safe to cook after a cockroach treatment?
Follow the instructions of your PCO and the product label. Normally food, utensils and surfaces are covered or cleaned first, and the treated areas are left to dry before use. Gel bait goes into cracks and hinges where food is not prepared.
