About Drywood Termite
๐Biology and behaviour
Drywood termites are different from the usual soil-dwelling termites: they live and feed entirely inside dry wood and need no contact with the ground. A colony can sit inside a single door frame, wooden bed, furniture piece or roof beam and grow slowly for years.
Because they stay hidden, the first clue is often a pile of tiny pellets under a piece of furniture or a window frame. In Indian homes they are commonly found in teak and other seasoned hardwood furniture, wooden panelling, picture frames and the timber of old buildings. They are brought in with infested furniture as often as they arrive on their own.

Signs of Drywood Termite
What to look for, and how to prevent it๐How to spot an infestation
- Small, hard, six-sided pellets about the size of a sesame seed in neat little piles
- Tiny round holes in wood through which the pellets are pushed out
- Wood that sounds papery or hollow when tapped
- Blistered or rippling surface on timber
- Winged swarmers or loose wings near windows and wooden fittings
๐ก๏ธHow to prevent it
- Inspect second-hand and antique furniture before bringing it indoors
- Seal and paint or polish unfinished timber, including the back and underside
- Keep cracks and joints in wooden fittings filled
- Reduce humidity and avoid storing cardboard against wood
- Look under heavy furniture for pellets once or twice a year
How Drywood Termite is controlled
Integrated approach๐งชControl methods
Pre-construction soil/anti-termite treatment during building is the most effective prevention; existing infestations need a licensed PCO's post-construction treatment (soil treatment, wood treatment, or a bait/monitoring station system) followed by periodic inspection, since termite damage is rarely covered by standard property insurance.
๐ทWhen to call a professional
Drywood termites need a different method from soil termites, because they are inside the wood. A PCO will find the extent of the infestation and use direct wood treatment in infested pieces. Heavily infested furniture may be better replaced than treated.

Common questions about Drywood Termite
How are drywood termites different from the termites I know?
Soil termites build mud tubes and live in the ground. Drywood termites live inside the wood itself and leave tiny pellets instead of mud, so ground treatment around the building does not control them.
What are the small pellets under my furniture?
Drywood termites push their droppings out through tiny holes. They look like fine, hard, six-sided granules and collect in small piles. It usually means an active colony inside the wood above.
Can I save infested furniture?
Light, localised infestations can often be treated. Heavily hollowed furniture may no longer be sound. A PCO can look at it and tell you which is likely.
Will anti-termite soil treatment stop them?
No. Soil treatment targets termites that come from the ground. Drywood termites need wood treatment or the removal of the infested piece.
