About Subterranean Termite

๐Ÿ“–Biology and behaviour

Subterranean termites are the main reason buildings in India are treated against termites. They live in large colonies in the soil, often hundreds of metres from the building, and travel to your wood, paper and cloth through the ground. By the time you notice damage, the colony has usually been feeding unseen for a long time.

They need moisture, so they build thin mud tubes along foundations, walls and pipes to travel safely from soil to food. After the first heavy monsoon rains many colonies release winged swarmers (alates) that gather around lights. Seeing swarmers indoors, or discarded wings on windowsills, is a strong warning that a mature colony is nearby.

Signs of Subterranean Termite

What to look for, and how to prevent it

๐Ÿ”ŽHow to spot an infestation

  • Pencil-thin mud tubes running up walls, foundation, door frames or pipes
  • Hollow-sounding wood when you tap it, or wood that crumbles to a thin shell
  • Paint or plaster that bubbles or ripples without a clear water leak
  • Winged insects after rain and piles of discarded wings near doors and windows
  • Damaged books, cartons, wooden skirting and cupboard backs, especially at ground level

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธHow to prevent it

  • Treat the soil before construction as per IS 6313, and keep records of the treatment
  • Keep timber and cardboard off the ground and away from wall bases
  • Fix leaking taps, pipes, AC drains and roof leaks that keep soil and walls damp
  • Keep a clear, dry gap between garden soil level and the plinth
  • Remove old wood, stumps and construction debris near the building
  • Inspect door frames, skirting and cupboards at the base regularly, especially after monsoon

How Subterranean Termite is controlled

Integrated approach

๐ŸงชControl methods

Pre-construction soil/anti-termite treatment during building is the most effective prevention; existing infestations need a licensed PCO's post-construction treatment (soil treatment, wood treatment, or a bait/monitoring station system) followed by periodic inspection, since termite damage is rarely covered by standard property insurance.

๐Ÿ‘ทWhen to call a professional

Termite treatment is a specialist job. Get a licensed PCO to inspect, to treat the soil along the foundation (pre-construction in new buildings, drill-and-inject in existing ones) and to explain the warranty and follow-up inspections. Do not just spray visible tubes, because the colony in the soil survives and returns.

Common questions about Subterranean Termite

How do I know if my house has termites?

Look for mud tubes on walls and pipes, hollow-sounding wood, bubbling paint, and winged swarmers or loose wings after rain. If you see any of these, ask a licensed operator to inspect rather than waiting.

What is pre-construction anti-termite treatment?

It is a soil treatment done during construction, in the foundation trenches, backfill and along the plinth, before the floor is laid. In India it is carried out following IS 6313 (Part 2). Post-construction treatment on existing buildings follows IS 6313 (Part 3).

Why do termites keep coming back after a treatment?

Usually the barrier in the soil has gaps, the treatment was done only where damage was visible, or moisture is still feeding the colony. A proper treatment covers the whole perimeter and the moisture problem is fixed.

Can I treat termites myself?

Surface sprays or home remedies do not reach the colony. For a real infestation, the soil barrier has to be done properly with the correct dilution and volume, and a PCO has the equipment and the training. You can use our dosage calculator to understand the quantity needed for a job.
