About House Mouse

📖Biology and behaviour

The house mouse is a small, curious rodent that lives close to people and needs very little space, food or water. An adult weighs about as much as a few coins and can squeeze through a gap of about 6 mm. It nests in cupboards, behind appliances, in boxes of paper and cloth, in wall voids and in storerooms.

Mice nibble many small meals rather than one big one, so they spoil far more food than they eat. They also leave droppings and urine trails and can gnaw cables and packaging. They breed quickly, so a few mice can become dozens in a few months.

Signs of House Mouse

What to look for, and how to prevent it

🔎How to spot an infestation

  • Small, dark, pointed droppings along edges, in cupboards and drawers
  • Nibbled packets, soap, candles and food
  • Shredded paper and cloth nests in quiet corners
  • Squeaks and scratching at night
  • Greasy smears and a musty smell
  • Gnawed insulation on cables

🛡️How to prevent it

  • Store dry food, pet food and grain in hard containers
  • Seal gaps around pipes, doors, skirting and cabinets with steel wool and sealant
  • Fit door sweeps and avoid clutter on floors
  • Clear crumbs and wipe surfaces
  • Reduce cardboard and cloth storage in damp corners
  • Use snap traps or sticky boards in affected spots, and check them daily

How House Mouse is controlled

Integrated approach

🧪Control methods

An effective programme combines exclusion (sealing entry points — as small as 6–10mm for mice), sanitation (removing food and harbourage), and a monitored bait-station or trapping programme placed and serviced by a licensed PCO; bait alone, without exclusion and sanitation, rarely solves a persistent infestation.

👷When to call a professional

If mice return after trapping, or you find activity in several rooms or a food premise, call a PCO. Inspection, proofing and a trap or bait plan for the site will do more than repeated sprays or ultrasonic gadgets.

Common questions about House Mouse

How small a gap can a mouse use?

Roughly 6 mm, the width of a pencil. That is why door gaps, pipe openings and gaps behind cabinets are common entry points.

Are ultrasonic repellents effective?

Evidence is weak and mice often get used to them. Proofing, sanitation and trapping are more reliable.

How quickly do mice breed?

Very fast. A female can have several litters a year, with several young each time, so early action is important.

Is a mouse infestation unhygienic?

Yes. Mice contaminate food and surfaces with droppings and urine, so discard exposed food and clean affected areas carefully.

Does bharatpest stock products for House Mouse?

Yes — see the Products section above for genuine, currently stocked options.
