About Roof Rat

📖Biology and behaviour

The roof rat, or black rat, is the most common house rat in India. It is slim, agile and a skilled climber, with a tail longer than its body and large ears and eyes. It nests above the ground: in false ceilings, roof spaces, wall voids, storage lofts, trees, godowns and stacked goods.

It travels along wires, pipes, parapets and tree branches, and it gets into buildings through very small gaps near the roof, ventilators and cable entries. Gnawed wires, contaminated food and noises in the ceiling at night are the usual signs.

Signs of Roof Rat

What to look for, and how to prevent it

🔎How to spot an infestation

  • Scratching or running sounds in the ceiling, loft or walls at night
  • Droppings along beams, ledges, shelves and stored goods
  • Chewed wires, packaging, soap bars and food in upper cupboards
  • Greasy rub marks along beams and pipes
  • Nesting material such as shredded paper, cloth and cardboard
  • Fruit in nearby trees that has been nibbled

🛡️How to prevent it

  • Trim tree branches that touch the roof and keep climbing plants away from the walls
  • Seal gaps around roof edges, vents, AC pipes and cable entries with metal mesh or cement
  • Keep ventilator openings screened
  • Store food in closed containers and clear fallen fruit
  • Keep lofts and godowns tidy and stack goods away from walls
  • Do not leave pet food out overnight

How Roof Rat is controlled

Integrated approach

🧪Control methods

An effective programme combines exclusion (sealing entry points — as small as 6–10mm for mice), sanitation (removing food and harbourage), and a monitored bait-station or trapping programme placed and serviced by a licensed PCO; bait alone, without exclusion and sanitation, rarely solves a persistent infestation.

👷When to call a professional

Roof rats are hard to find and reach by yourself. A PCO will inspect the roof void and entry points, place baits or traps safely and help with proofing. Poison used in ceilings can cause bad smells if rodents die inside, so a plan to find and remove carcasses matters.

Common questions about Roof Rat

Why do I hear noises in the ceiling at night?

Roof rats are nocturnal and live in false ceilings and roof spaces. They run along beams and wires while looking for food and nesting material.

How are they getting into my home?

Through gaps as small as a thumb: roof edges, ventilators, pipe and cable entries and branches that touch the building.

Is poison the best option?

Not always. Baits are one tool, but entry points must be sealed and food removed, or new rats will keep coming. Traps may be better in some places.

Can rats cause fires?

Chewed insulation on wiring can cause short circuits. If you hear rodents in the ceiling, have the wiring checked.
