About Anopheles Mosquito
๐Biology and behaviour
Anopheles mosquitoes are the only mosquitoes that transmit malaria. They bite from dusk to dawn and rest with their body tilted at an angle to the wall, which helps tell them from Culex. In rural India species like Anopheles culicifacies breed in irrigation channels, paddy fields and ponds, while Anopheles stephensi has adapted to cities, breeding in overhead tanks, cisterns, wells, construction sites and water storage drums.
Because they bite at night, sleeping protection and timely testing of fevers matter as much as mosquito control.

Signs of Anopheles Mosquito
What to look for, and how to prevent it๐How to spot an infestation
- Night-time bites and a mosquito that lands with its rear end raised
- Larvae lying flat just below the water surface rather than hanging upside down
- Water left in cisterns, wells, drums, pits and slow-draining construction sites
- Cases of intermittent fever with chills in the neighbourhood
๐ก๏ธHow to prevent it
- Sleep under a net or in a screened room, and use repellents in the evening
- Cover water tanks, cisterns and drums, and drain or fill pits and puddles
- Keep sump and tank covers closed and fit mesh to vents
- Remove stagnant water around construction sites and building basements
- Get a blood test for any recurring fever and complete the treatment your doctor gives
- Support municipal larval control and fogging campaigns
How Anopheles Mosquito is controlled
Integrated approach๐งชControl methods
Source reduction (eliminating standing water on a weekly cycle) is the single most effective step, supported by larvicide treatment of water that can't be drained, and adulticide fogging or space-spraying by a licensed PCO during high-activity periods.
๐ทWhen to call a professional
For societies, hospitals, construction sites and industries, a PCO can plan larval source management and residual treatment of indoor resting spots with a schedule suited to the local malaria season.

Common questions about Anopheles Mosquito
How can I tell Anopheles from other mosquitoes?
Anopheles rests with its body at an angle to the surface and its head lower, and its larvae lie flat on the water. Other mosquitoes sit parallel to the surface and larvae hang with a breathing tube.
Does malaria spread through mosquito bites only?
Malaria is spread by the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. Any fever should be tested early, and treatment should follow a doctor's advice.
Where does city malaria come from?
In many cities Anopheles stephensi breeds in overhead tanks, cisterns, wells and water-storage containers on construction sites. Covering and managing these reduces the risk.
Are mosquito nets worth using?
Yes. Because Anopheles bites at night, sleeping under a net protects very effectively, especially for children and pregnant women.
