About Culex Mosquito
📖Biology and behaviour
Culex mosquitoes, especially Culex quinquefasciatus, are the common brown nuisance mosquitoes that swarm at dusk and bite through the night in Indian cities and towns. They can spread lymphatic filariasis, and related Culex species are linked to Japanese encephalitis in rural, rice-growing areas.
Unlike Aedes, Culex prefer dirty, organically rich water: blocked drains, open sewers, septic tank vents, soak pits, waste-water puddles and overflowing storm drains. Females lay their eggs in floating rafts that look like tiny black specks on the surface. Where drainage is poor, the population can reach very high numbers.

Signs of Culex Mosquito
What to look for, and how to prevent it🔎How to spot an infestation
- Humming swarms in the evening and bites while you sleep
- Black raft-like clusters of eggs and wriggling larvae in drains and puddles
- Blocked drains, open sewers, septic tank vents without mesh
- Strong smell from stagnant waste-water near the premises
🛡️How to prevent it
- Keep drains flowing and clear silt and plastic from gutters regularly
- Fit fine mesh over septic tank and sewer vents
- Fill puddles and low spots where waste-water collects
- Close windows at dusk or use screens, and sleep under a net
- Keep animal sheds and pig sties clean, and move them away from homes if possible
- Coordinate with the municipality when public drains are the source
How Culex Mosquito is controlled
Integrated approach🧪Control methods
Source reduction (eliminating standing water on a weekly cycle) is the single most effective step, supported by larvicide treatment of water that can't be drained, and adulticide fogging or space-spraying by a licensed PCO during high-activity periods.
👷When to call a professional
Large, drain-based infestations need a coordinated programme. A PCO can apply larvicide in drains and tanks that cannot be cleaned, and carry out adult treatment in resting areas, while you fix the underlying drainage.

Common questions about Culex Mosquito
Why are there so many mosquitoes near my drain?
Culex mosquitoes breed in dirty, still water. A blocked drain, an uncovered septic vent or a leaking sewer produces a continuous supply, and they come indoors in the evening.
Is Culex dangerous?
Culex quinquefasciatus can transmit lymphatic filariasis, and some Culex species spread Japanese encephalitis in rural areas. In most homes it is mainly a persistent nuisance.
Do mosquito coils and liquid vaporisers work?
They reduce bites in a closed room for a few hours but do not remove the breeding source. Use them as a short-term aid while you fix drainage.
How often should drains be treated?
It depends on the season and the site. During monsoon, breeding is rapid and a PCO may recommend fortnightly or monthly visits, with drain cleaning in between.
