Bed bugs are flat, wingless, blood-feeding insects that hide within a few metres of where people sleep. They do not transmit disease, but the bites, itching, sleep loss, anxiety and social stigma make them one of the most distressing pests a household or hotel can face. Worldwide resurgence since the 1990s is driven by travel and by widespread insecticide resistance.

🔬Species & identification

SpeciesWhere foundIdentification & habits
Common bed bug (Cimex lectularius)Worldwide, temperate and tropicalReddish brown, oval, flattened, 4–5 mm — about the size of an apple seed. Becomes swollen and darker after feeding.
Tropical bed bug (Cimex hemipterus)India and tropical AsiaVery similar in appearance and behaviour; better adapted to higher temperatures and common across India. Practical control is the same for both.

🔄Life cycle & biology

6–10 daysEgg

White, about 1 mm, cemented into cracks in clusters. Eggs are glued firmly and are not removed by ordinary vacuuming or shaking.

5–8 weeks totalNymph (5 stages)

Each stage needs at least one blood meal before moulting. Newly hatched nymphs are almost translucent and very hard to see.

6–12 monthsAdult

A female lays 200–500 eggs in her lifetime. Adults can survive several months — in cool conditions even up to a year — without feeding, which is why an empty room can still be infested.

Because eggs are immune to most insecticides and hatch in about a week, a second treatment 10–14 days after the first is essential. Skipping it is the single most common reason bed bug jobs fail.

🧭Behaviour & habits

Bed bugs are nocturnal and drawn by carbon dioxide, warmth and body odour. They feed for 3–10 minutes, usually in the hours before dawn, then return to harbourage. Typical hiding places are mattress seams and tags, bed frame joints, headboard backs, sofa seams, skirting, loose wallpaper, electrical sockets and picture frames — anywhere dark and tight within about 2 metres of the sleeping person. Evidence includes dark ink-like faecal spots along seams, pale shed skins, tiny white eggs, and a sweetish musty odour in heavy infestations. They spread by being carried: luggage, second-hand furniture, mattresses, laundry, school bags. In flats they migrate through wall voids and conduits, so treating one unit alone often fails.

⚕️Health & economic significance

Bites appear as itchy red welts, often in a line or cluster, and reactions vary from none at all to large weals. Scratching may lead to secondary bacterial infection. The greater burden is psychological — insomnia, anxiety and distress are well documented in bed bug cases, and in hotels the reputational damage from a single online review can be severe.

🧹Physical & non-chemical control

  • Heat is the most reliable non-chemical kill: bed bugs and their eggs die at about 45–50 °C sustained. Wash linen and clothing at 60 °C, or tumble dry hot for 30 minutes — the dryer, not the wash, does the killing.
  • Professional whole-room heat treatment raises the room to around 50–56 °C for several hours and kills all stages including eggs, with no residue.
  • Steam treatment at the nozzle (over 100 °C) applied slowly along mattress seams, bed frames and sofa joints kills on contact — move slowly, about 2–3 cm per second.
  • Vacuum seams, frames and skirting with a crevice tool; seal and dispose of the bag immediately outside the building.
  • Encase mattress and box spring in a certified bed-bug-proof cover and leave it on for at least a year — bugs inside starve and new ones cannot enter.
  • Pull the bed 10 cm away from the wall, remove bed skirts touching the floor, and fit interceptor cups under each leg — this isolates the bed and monitors activity.
  • Never discard infested furniture without sealing and marking it — dumping spreads the infestation to the next family.
  • Freezing works only at −18 °C for at least four days; a domestic freezer set warmer will not do it.

🧪Chemical control

Residual sprays

Applied to harbourage — seams, frame joints, skirting, cracks — not broadcast over mattresses. Dual-active suspension concentrates such as imidacloprid + beta-cyfluthrin SC are widely used because the two modes of action help against resistant populations.

Insect growth regulators

Pyriproxyfen and similar IGRs stop nymphs maturing and reduce egg viability. Used alongside adulticides in professional programmes.

Desiccant dusts

Silica gel and diatomaceous earth applied lightly in voids, behind skirting, in bed frame joints and sockets. They damage the waxy cuticle so the insect dies of water loss — no resistance is possible against a physical mode of action. Silica gel dust is markedly more effective than DE. Apply as a barely visible film; a thick pile is avoided by insects.

Contact aerosols and foams

For deep crevices and hollow bed frame tubing where sprays cannot reach.

Follow-up

A second treatment 10–14 days later, and a third if monitoring shows activity, is standard practice.

Pyrethroid resistance in bed bugs is now widespread globally and documented in India. Relying on a single pyrethroid spray is the main cause of repeat failures. Combine chemical groups with heat, steam, encasement and dusts — an integrated approach is not optional with this pest.

💬Frequently asked questions

Do bed bugs spread disease?

No human disease is known to be transmitted by bed bugs. The harm is from bites, itching, secondary infection from scratching, and the sleep loss and anxiety they cause.

Can bed bugs live in a room with no one in it?

Yes. Adults can survive several months without a blood meal, so a closed or unused room can remain infested and re-start once someone sleeps there.

Why did they come back after treatment?

Almost always because eggs hatched after the first treatment and no follow-up was done, harbourages such as sofas or adjacent rooms were missed, or a pyrethroid-resistant population was treated with a single pyrethroid.
