Rattus norvegicus, Rattus rattus, Mus musculus
Leptospirosis, plague, salmonellosis; major cause of fire and food loss
Rattus norvegicus, Rattus rattus, Mus musculus
Rodents damage more than they eat. They contaminate food with urine and droppings, gnaw electrical cables and cause fires, undermine floors and drains, and carry diseases including leptospirosis, salmonellosis, hantavirus and plague. Because their incisors grow continuously, they must gnaw constantly — on wood, plastic, lead pipe, cable insulation and even soft concrete.
| Species | Where found | Identification & habits |
|---|---|---|
| Norway / brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) | Sewers, basements, godowns, ground floors | Large and heavy (200–500 g), blunt nose, small ears, tail shorter than body. Burrows in soil, along foundations and drains. Excellent swimmer — enters buildings through sewer lines and toilet traps. Neophobic: avoids new objects for days, so traps and bait stations must be left in place before being activated. |
| Roof rat / black rat (Rattus rattus) | False ceilings, ducts, upper floors, godown stacks | Slender (150–250 g), pointed nose, large ears, tail longer than body. An outstanding climber that travels along cables, pipes and beams and nests high — false ceilings, attics, stacked bags. The most common commensal rat in Indian cities. |
| House mouse (Mus musculus) | Kitchens, offices, packing areas, cavity walls | Small (15–25 g), passes through a gap the width of a pencil (about 6 mm). Inquisitive rather than neophobic, so it investigates new traps quickly. Nibbles at many food points a night instead of one big meal — which changes bait strategy completely. |
| Lesser bandicoot rat (Bandicota bengalensis) | Godowns, grain stores, drains, agricultural premises | Large, dark, aggressive burrower common in Indian godowns and drains; causes severe structural burrowing damage. |
A female can conceive again within 48 hours of giving birth.
Rats: 4–7 litters per year. Mice: up to 8 litters per year.
Young rodents can breed at about two months of age.
Short life, very high replacement rate — populations recover quickly if control stops.
Rodents are neophobic (rats) or inquisitive (mice), nocturnal, and creatures of habit: they run along the same routes hugging walls, leaving dark grease marks from body oils. Fresh droppings, gnaw marks, smear runs, burrows and urine that fluoresces under UV light are the standard survey evidence. They have poor eyesight but exceptional smell, hearing, touch through whiskers, and balance. Rats need 15–30 ml of water daily, mice can survive on food moisture alone. They can squeeze through any gap their skull passes — 12 mm for a rat, 6 mm for a mouse — climb vertical brick, swim, and jump around a foot vertically.
Leptospirosis spreads through rat urine in water and is a recurring monsoon danger in Indian cities. Rodents also carry Salmonella, hantavirus, rat-bite fever and murine typhus, and their fleas historically carried plague. In food businesses, evidence of rodent activity is grounds for licence action under FSSAI. Electrical fires caused by gnawed insulation are a documented and underestimated risk in godowns and offices.
Warfarin, coumatetralyl — need repeated feeding over several days. Lower secondary-poisoning risk to cats, owls and dogs; still useful where resistance is absent.
Bromadiolone, brodifacoum, difethialone — a single feed can be lethal, with death after 3–7 days. Powerful but carry real secondary-poisoning risk for predators and pets; use in tamper-resistant stations only.
Zinc phosphide — fast acting, used where a quick knockdown is needed. Requires pre-baiting with untreated bait for 3–4 days to overcome rat neophobia, otherwise bait shyness develops and the site becomes hard to treat afterwards.
All rodenticide must be inside tamper-resistant, keyed stations, secured in place, numbered and logged on a site plan. This is a food-safety audit requirement and protects children and non-target animals.
Contact dusts placed in runways and voids where bait acceptance is poor; the rodent grooms and ingests the active ingredient.
Rats are neophobic — they avoid new objects and new foods for several days. Place stations with untreated bait first (pre-baiting) for 3–4 days, then switch to treated bait.
It is possible, which is why trapping is preferred in kitchens, hospitals and food plants. Where baiting is used, place stations along external runways rather than deep inside voids.
About 6 mm — the width of a pencil. If a pencil fits in the gap, so does a mouse.
